Graduate Studies at the University of Idaho

Welcome!

Graduate study at the University of Idaho gives you the opportunity to work with dedicated faculty in an exciting, rigorous academic environment. UI has the principal responsibility for research and the granting of the Ph.D. degree in Idaho. We have the state's largest library, with more than 2.5 million books, periodicals, government documents and special collections. For the third straight year, our grants, contracts and research appropriations exceeded $100 million in Fiscal Year 05.

Since 1894, the University of Idaho has granted 20,162 Master's, 1,022 Specialist, 230 Honorary, 3,361 Law and 2,470 Doctorate degrees. Of course since then, graduate education at UI has changed considerably. New disciplines -- such as bioinformatics, neuroscience and environmental science -- have emerged, while traditional disciplines, such as political science and english, have developed new specialty areas.

The dedicated faculty and staff at UI are committed to your success. We offer graduate degrees from 47 departments and I urge you to research the opportunities in detail.

I am personally committed to help departments maintain supportive academic environments for students, promoting student organizations and services, and to hearing many voices from the graduate students. It is a diverse, fascinating group of people. We have students enrolled from all 44 Idaho counties, all 50 states, and 92 countries. Our 645 international students enrich our small, friendly, rural community.

In both Fall and Spring semesters, we hold a 2-day training program and a series of workshops on How to be a Teaching Assistant, a program designed to strengthen leadership skills, develop a professional portfolio and help in career development.

Please contact the staff of the College of Graduate Studies, Associate Dean Alton Campbell, Valerie Roberts, Cheri Cole, or Ashley Bogar with any questions you may have. All of us wish you personal and professional success in all aspects of your graduate education.

Sincerely,

Margrit von Braun

Dean, College of Graduate Studies
