Admissions Policy - New Applicants

Applications are initially reviewed by the Neuroscience Graduate Affairs Committee, composed of Neuroscience faculty elected for this purpose.  Admission to this program is highly competitive.  Even exceptional applicants are admitted only when there is an opening with one of the participating faculty. For full consideration for financial support your application should be received by February 1 to begin in the following fall. The Graduate Record Examination (GRE) is required of all applicants; successful applicants must have a total score of at least 1200+4 (verbal+quant, analytical writing score).  All applicants must provide three letters of reference that speak to the applicants aptitude for graduate research.  For applicants for whom English is a second language, a TOEFL score of at least 600 (250 computer-based or 100 IBT) is required.  Successful applicants must also have at least a 3.0 undergraduate GPA.  In exceptional circumstances, these requirements may be adjusted.  Applications that meet these criteria are forwarded to the appropriate faculty for review.   Students who are then accepted by Neuroscience faculty are accepted by the Neuroscience Program.

Once accepted, students have the following options for financial support:

  1. Students may apply for a Graduate Fellowship through the Neuroscience Program (see below).

  2. Students may be supported by Graduate Research Assistantships through their major professor.

  3. Students may apply for Teaching Assistantships in participating Departments. The Neuroscience Graduate Affairs Committee will provide participating Departments with a list of Neuroscience students interested in Teaching Assistantships.
The Graduate Affairs Committee will also review the academic background of each applicant to determine any areas of deficiency.  The following undergraduate courses (or their equivalents) are required: biology, cell biology or biochemistry, genetics, introductory psychology, general and organic chemistry, statistics, mathematics through calculus, physics and computer science.  Identified deficiencies will be noted for future use by the students graduate committee should the student be accepted.

Those wishing to apply should go to the University of Idaho Graduate Admissions website.  Applicants must provide three letters of reference and a statement of research interests that identifies the research he or she would like to pursue and why he or she wishes to pursue it at the University of Idaho.  Note:  students with specific research projects directed by specific Neuroscience faculty who have agreed to direct this research will have priority in admissions decisions it is the responsibility of the student to identify these research topics and to obtain the commitment from faculty.

Admissions Policy - Transfers from other UI graduate programs

Graduate Fellowship Applications

All students admitted into the program are eligible to apply for a Neuroscience Fellowship.  These are one year fellowships for approximately $21,000/year and include a fee waiver; two/three will be awarded each year.  The Neuroscience Graduate Affairs Committee will use the following criteria for selection of Fellowship recipients:

  1. Information in the students application (e.g., GPA, letters, etc.)

  2. Letter of nomination from the student's major professor.
The Committee will maintain as a goal to offer one fellowship in each of the three major areas of Neuroscience at UI: neurobiology, cognitive neuroscience/behavior, and computational neuroscience.  An additional goal is to offer these fellowships to students who are at or near the beginning of their graduate studies.
